The different carrying positions are a key element of ergonomics and babywearing. All our baby carrier models can be used from birth (with no need for any infant insert). Here you can see which of our baby carriers have three carrying positions, which have four, and the recommended period of use for each model.
Your baby has a great need for closeness and security during their first few months. Moreover, the head of a very young baby accounts for about one quarter of their total body weight. Since their neck muscles are still developing, it’s difficult for your baby to hold their head upright for any length of time. That’s why your baby should be carried in the facing-in position for the first five months.
After the age of five months, most babies will be ready to be carried facing out. At this age, the baby’s hips, spine and neck muscles are sufficiently developed, and their neck is strong enough to allow them to hold their head upright. Many babies are also able to sit unaided at this age, and will usually be showing curiosity about and interest in what’s happening around them.
Your most important job as a parent is to pay attention and respond to your baby’s signals. Babywearing in the facing-out position is an option that many parents and children enjoy, whereas others prefer the facing-in position, even after the age of five months. Let your baby decide how they want to be carried.
